Went to elementary school with a kid whose first name was Harry and his last name was Mann. "Are you a hairy man?" was a favorite among the kids. Then he moved away after second grade, I think, probably to go through the whole thing all over again at some other school. Poor guy never had a chance.

I found this story on the internet - Talula Does The Hula. A New Zealand judge ordered the parents of this 9-year-old to be renamed.

My name is Faye. I'm a dude. I was named after my paternal grandfather, a fact which didn't really help. Sorry Lisa, no sympathy here.

I went to elementary school with a girl named Cinnamon. Worse yet, her last name was Hill. Parents, that is just not cool.

My husband's first name is MACTHE. His mom names him after a Russian author, but couldn't remember how to spell his name. So she made it up. My poor husband has had his name mispronounced his entire life! Its actually quite simple Mac-thee. But for some reason its usually Match-ee.
Needless to say this name will not be handed down to our child!

My friend wanted to name her daughter M'Kiyah Alise (pronounced Ma-KI-uh Uh-LEESE). I tried and tried to talk her out of it because of difficulties with spelling and pronunciation, but she wouldn't hear of it.

One thing that expectant parents need to know is that butchering the spelling of a traditional name will not make it unique. If they won't something "different" then they should try doing a little research instead of dooming their poor child to a lifetime of correcting people. When role is called, Emily, E'Milly Emely and Emmilee are the same!

Okay- I speak on behalf of all concerned mommies-of-boys. Mommies-of-girls: STOP TAKING ALL OF THE GOOD BOY NAMES! See, once an otherwise great boy name (even ones like William or Ryan, which have distinctly male meanings) is used for girls, it becomes demasculated. So, we have stories like the one shown here: Courtney used to be a boy name!

While watching Donny Deutsch on The Big Idea tonight, there was a woman who called in named "Haralee". I wasn't watching the screen at the time to see it spelled out and gasped a little because it sounded like "Horror"-lee. What is that? Maybe Donny said it wrong and it was supposed to sound like "merrily." Who knows!
